Marine Sciences-Background
Spanning a length of about 7500 Km, the coastal zone of India is a life support to nearly 50 million people. The modern concept of Exclusive Economic Zone entails us exploitation right in 2.02 million sq. km (roughly 200 nautical miles into the sea from the coast line) and the coastal zone comprises of a number of tropical habitats like mangroves, coral reefs, intertidal areas, estuaries, phytoplankton, shelf water etc. Moreover, it is all the more important for us to conserve the large bio diversity while also ensuring that we use the space and resources judiciously and effectively. In this context, remote sensing is an important tool of research and exploration. The large array of platforms and sensors that dot the sky have various capabilities of information collection that are of vital importance to environmental studies.

In the wake of national priorities on food and minerals, marine research interests have multiplied of late. The conservation of coastal environment in order to balance the anthropogenic stress on it is also of simultaneous interest to marine scientists. The relevance of marine environment to the society is enhanced and modern methods of ocean exploration are being appreciated. In the background, Marine Science Division of IIRS has been offering training courses, R & D opportunities and consultancy services on coastal processes and marine resources since 1986.

Marine Science Division primarily focus on the following themes:

  • Coastal Zone Management
  • Coastal hazards and their management
  • Salt water intrusion into coastal aquifer
  • Sea Surface Temperature
  • Suspended sediment concentration
  • Primary productivity
  • Near shore water quality study
  • Coastal geomorphology
  • Coastal tourism
  • Fish and fisheries study
