Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing-Background

<

Photogrammetry and Remote sensing division is one of the oldest divisions of the institute imparting professional training in the field of photogrammetry, cartography, remote sensing, and image processing since 1966 to varied course participants including university teachers, academicians, govt. officials, and freshly graduated students. On an average 250+ participants receive training every year from this division. It started with training on interpretation, analysis and photogrammetric extraction using aerial photographs and gradually evolved and introduced satellite image interpretation, digital image analysis, satellite photogrammetry, LiDAR etc

Infrastructure Facility

The strength of the division comes from its qualified, dedicated and experienced team and the necessary infrastructure facilities. The division has modern classroom with audiovisual facility. The division computer laboratories are equipped state-of-art PC’s; and software’s- ERDAS Imagine, Leica Photogrammetry Suite, PCI Geomatica, Ortho engine, Ecognition, ENVI, Arc GIS/Arc MAP, Arc view, ILWIS. Field instruments include hand held and geodetic GPS receivers, mobile GPS and Infrared radiation thermometer. Visual instruments for 3D visualization, feature extraction and object height determination. High end photogrammetric workstation, close range Photogrammetric camera and s/w for processing satellite and aerial stereo images for DEM generation and 3D feature extraction,.

Research and Operational Projects details

The division has carried out a number of consultancy projects on large scale surveys and preparation of photo maps, digital mapping, and its research emphasis is focused on photogrammetric applications such as cartographic accuracy evaluation of aerial and satellite data, terrestrial close range photogrammetry, cost effective image map production, advanced techniques in image processing, automatic feature extraction, GPS technology and Lidar data processing. The division has carried out various user projects: preparation of large scale map photomaps for MP State Govt., Saharanpur, and Patna city, Identifying GPS location for new sugar factory establishment. We have participated in various ISRO funded projects Biome level classification (IGBP), Generation of National level database on Land use / Land cover (NRR), Generation of Land surface parameters for Monsoon variability studies using Regional Climate Model (IGBP), and international projects Global Land cover mapping project using Spot-4 Vegetation (VGT) data TREES II, Augmentation of Forest cover information in India and Myanmar TREES I.
