Water Resources-Background
Water Resources Division is one of the most recent divisions in IIRS, which was established in 1986, after the review of the IIRS programs by the Kamat Committee.  The main objective of establishment of this division to care of the needs of the capacity building in the field of remote sensing applications to water resources.  The long term training programme enuisaged in “Post Graduate Diploma Course in Water Resources” and short duration course is “Orientation Course in Water Resources”.  The main clientale for the water resources division are Central Govt. establishments such as Central Water Commission, National Water Development Agency, National Institute of Hydrology, Ganga Flood Control Commossion, Bhakra Beas Management Board etc., State Govt. establishment such as State Remote Sensing Centre, irrigation and command area development, Public Work Departments, Public Health Departments etc.  In addition to the government establishment many private enterprenures, NGO and students are also showing interest as private candidates by paying course fee.

In addition to this Water Resources Division has several tailor made special courses of one week to 4 week duration.  The clientale for the special courses are Rajiv Gandhi Mission for Watershed Development, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh, National Agriculture Bank for Rural Development (NABARD), World Health Organisation (WHO) for Public Health Departments of various states, Tamilnadu Water Resources Organisation (TNWRO), Regional Training Centre for Integrated Watershed Development Project (IWDP).  These tailor made courses have made it possible for the user departments and organisations to start using the remote snesing and GIS technology for the day to day activities.

In view of the change of clientale, there is a necessity of orienting the training programmes towards education programmes in a short-duration, so that utility of the technology can be made by the users at the earliest.
